Regular Exams and Cleanings are the Best Way to Protect Your Smile

At Premier Dental, we strongly recommend that our patients get a dental exam and professional tooth cleaning twice a year.

Regular dental cleanings and exams are the key to maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile. A biannual dental exam will ensure that any potential dental problems — tooth decay, gum disease, changes in tooth position, etc. — are diagnosed and treated in their earliest stages. And a regular tooth cleaning will prevent the buildup of particles that can affect the appearance of your smile, your breath, and possibly lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems.

What to Expect At Your Dental Exam

During a comprehensive dental exam, the dentist will check your mouth for signs of:

  • Tooth Decay
  • Gum Disease
  • Oral Cancer

They will take a look at the condition of any restorative work you may have, such as fillings, bridgescrowns, etc., to ensure no repairs or replacements are needed.

X-Ray photos will be used to detect problems that aren’t visible to the naked eye, such as inside the tooth or its roots, including cysts, bone loss, tooth decay, and tumors.

Afterwards, your dentist will carefully review the results of the examination with you. He will discuss any potential problems you may have and suggest treatment options. If no problems are found, the dentist will ask you to come back in six months for another examination.

After the Exam, a Tooth Cleaning

Equally as important as getting your teeth examined is getting your teeth professionally cleaned. Even though you regularly brush and floss at home, you may be missing spots that could lead to bad breath, discolored teeth, tooth decay, and other problems. A thorough, professional dental cleaning can reduce the risks of tooth decay, infection and disease, while improving your breath and brightening your smile.

In most cases, your teeth will be cleaned by a trained dental hygienist. They have been trained to use a number of specialized tools that clean your teeth in ways that brushing and flossing can’t. During your tooth cleaning, the hygienist will:

Remove plaque. Plaque is caused by bacteria that feeds on the food debris found on the surface of your teeth. Getting rid of plaque is important, because as the bacteria feed, they release toxins that can inflame your gums, a condition that can eventually lead to periodontal disease. Since plaque is sticky and almost invisible, a professional tooth cleaning is almost the only way to remove it.

Remove tartar. When plaque remains in the mouth too long, it can harden and become tartar. Tartar builds up above and below the gum lines and can only be removed via professional dental instruments.

Polish your teeth. After any plaque or tartar is removed, the hygienist will polish your teeth to remove discoloring stains on your teeth.

Regular dental exams can reveal early symptoms of cavities, gum disease, as well as crooked teeth and other cosmetic problems in children. Early detection and effective treatment will ensure you and your family enjoy healthy, happy smiles.
