If you suffer from a toothache and have been using home remedies to treat your symptoms, you may be thinking about the possibility of a tooth extraction or removal. While this is typically an option offered by your dentist, you should consider carefully before having one. Here we will talk more about the options you have and how to know if a tooth extraction is right for you.
Reasons You May Need a Tooth to Be Removed
There are numerous reasons that lead to tooth extraction. It is not always inevitable, and a lot of the time there will be alternative treatments available to you. Our dentist will be able to tell you the best way forward for you. There may be many reasons why tooth extraction may be necessary:
- Cracked or fractured teeth
- Crowded or impacted wisdom teeth
- Tooth decay or infection
- Preparation for another dental procedure
We make the tooth extraction procedure as safe and painless as possible for patients. Extractions are usually performed in a single visit. Clear Lake emergency tooth extraction services are available as well.
Pain-Free Tooth Extraction/Removal at Premier Dental
First, Chief Dentist Mauricio Rodriguez, DDS, who is highly experienced with general oral surgery procedures, will perform a thorough examination of the affected tooth or teeth to determine if an extraction is necessary. Extractions are always a last resort; we will make every effort to save the tooth before removing it if possible.
The extraction procedure typically doesn’t take very long to perform.
- Local anesthesia is applied until the area around the tooth is completely numb. Contrary to popular belief, the tooth is not “pulled” out but gently nudged with pressure until the ligaments anchoring the tooth in place loosen their grip.
- After the tooth has been removed, the area is cleaned and sanitized to help prevent infection. While the procedure can result in swelling and discomfort, these symptoms usually dissipate within 1 week of the procedure. Pain is generally managed through over-the-counter medications .
Don’t worry about gaps in your smile: we can replace the missing tooth or teeth with natural-looking bridges or dental implants. Dr. Rodriguez will discuss your options before the procedure.
